Plenty of birthdays in October. While in the bookstore, I bought cards. A couple of birthday cards. And a Halloween card. One for the nephew. One for the sister-in-law. One for the niece. Nice.

Also, an issue of Monocle.

Frightening Bride!

Spooks are coming. It's getting closer to Halloween and the decorations are starting to show up at your local place of shopping and retail. I was walking into one said place and happened to see this little adorable spook. It's no Annabelle, but it still spooked me. That's why I took a picture: so I can treasure it in the dark nights of autumn.

Boo!

It is not a horror movie. It is more an adventure with horror overtones -- sort of a "Goonies" with Sloth being a very scary, creepy clown. The merry band of kids go on this adventure to rid the town of frightening Pennywise. They lived happily ever after. End Part One. Afterwards, I wasn't scared to go to sleep with the lights off.

I've never seen "Stranger Things," but one of the casts of It is from there. This film had a feel of that television show. First, because of the setting in the 80s. Next, because it seems to find kids who are free to roam around their town. Finally, because I have a feeling that It was modeled after the show. I'm sure I'm wrong, but in other ways I'm sure I'm right.

Not a bad film. Over the weekend I also caught the 90s version of It on television. Very, very different. Now I know what to look forward to in the second part.

The cliche I love when reading a ghost story is how at the start the narrator mentions how at first he didn't believe in the supernatural. As the ghost story unfolds, it becomes apparent that supernatural things are afoot. So that by the end, the narrator readily believes the unbelievable.

Crimson Peak opens with the heroine of the film saying just that. But it is the end of the ghost story. So Crimson Peak unfolds to tell you about the ghosts. But it ends up, she's known ghosts all her life.

This film is really predictable. You know where it is going once the characters show up. The brother, the sister. Yes, that will happen. The dead mother. The long lost wives. The many places visited. You know they all feed into the story. The only thing is that love does bloom which is hard to believe.

It's not a bad movie. It was just marketed wrong. It is as the narrator had said a story with ghosts. It is not a horror flick, but a gothic tale with ghosts in it. Victorian but with ghosts in it. Del Toro should never have shown the creepy crawly ghost and left it all to our imagination.

Link of the Day [9.13.14]

I saw this thing on the internet that was a preview of a graphic novel about spooky stories. I believe I saw it on AV Club. The thing is I saw that a while ago and lost track of what the graphic novel was about. I'm still sure I saw it at the AV Club, but I can't find it there.

You see I like spooky stories. I love ghost stories, haunted houses, getting the creeps, and goosebumps springing up on along the arm. If there's supernatural things about, I'm there. So a graphic novel with scares is right about my alley.

But I didn't know who wrote it, because I could not remember anything about that AV Club article. Was it even an AV Club article?

Yet, here we are I found it from a link at Slate.com. It's by an artist, Emily Carroll, and she's got plenty of ghastly graphic tales on her site. I want to check them out, then get the book.

I should be writing this review of The Conjuring in bright daylight, but a rainshower has just rolled through darkening the evening sky. Hopefully, it doesn't put shadows in places where I dare not look.

The Conjuring was about one of the scariest cases of the paranormal investigators, Ed and Lorraine Warren. They were the investigators responsible for the Amityville case. At the start, they are investigating a haunted doll. That doll is the most frighteningly evil doll you will ever see. I hate dolls.

The Warrens eventually are asked to investigate a haunting at the Perron house built on the plantation of a former Salem farmer. Yeah, it's not an Indian burial ground, but it is the cause of the evil.

The Conjuring then mixes up several better scary movies. There's the Poltergeist style investigation when the Warrens set up camp in the house awaiting the paranormal activities to commence. There's The Exorcist style exorcism to exorcise the evil from the house.
You would think the movie is derivative. It's not. It mixes these other films in the best way for a different effect.

Supposedly, The Conjuring was rated R because of it being to scary. I wasn't scared enough, and that is saying something. I squirm when watching scary movies. I did squirm during this one, but later at night I didn't get scared of the dark. And by the next day, wasn't scared of anything at all. Does this make it terrible because it failed to make me scared? No. I still loved getting creeped out. I still loved the setting and the pacing. The ghost was okay (The Woman In Black still creeps me out to this day), but overall it did its job.

I was over my moms this evening.

"I want to show you something. It's weird."

"Weird? How?"

She was leading me to the far side of the the balcony.

"Oh. We can't see it from here."

"What? What's weird."

When my mom uses the word, weird. It is rather unsettling. It's not like us younguns who casually toss it off. It's disturbing.

We head upstairs for a better look.

"What's weird? What is it?"

She won't tell me. She wants to show me. We look out the window into the small briar patch between the houses.

"Do you remember the chairs that your Tita Mina brought over? I think that's one of them there." [In the woods]

Creepy. Who would've done that. How? Why?

"Gabe said that there were homeless living in the Haunted Woods by school."

I don't think this put up by a homeless man. There's kids playing in the backyard. They could've set up the chair as part of their 'fort.'

Still, the chair sits in the vegetation waiting for someone to sit in it.

creature-from-the-black-lagoon

Something about this picture that is really sexy and or disturbing. It's sexy with the actress, Julie Adams, in a classic pinup girl pose. Disturbing because of the very phallic like Creature posed to pounce on her. Lots to think about there. And lots to dissect.

This is a great list of movies!

Some for kids. Some for adults. Some for horror fans. Some for non-horror fans. It's got it all.

Time to crank up the scare factor and check out a few of these.

Let's go ghost hunting.

What's that under the bed? Is there a strange shadow by the window? I think the bed shows a clear depression in the shape of a woman. Can it be the White Lady of Ordsall Hall?

It's all in your imagination. There's nothing there. Not like there's anything downstairs at this moment.

What's that?

I'll go investigate...

Let's go ghost hunting.

Do you see anything? Is there something creeping around the basement hall? Is there a shadow in the corner of the children's room? Or is the grey lady roaming the research room?

I don't see anything in the pictures. I don't think there is anything there.

But I think there may be something upstairs in the house. Let me check...

The problem with the ghosts in The Woman In Black is that they are real. There is nothing left to the imagination. It was a real ghost with a real curse looking to avenge the death of her son by causing misfortune on the villagers and their children. It's not all in the protagonist's head, a mature Harry Potter, Daniel Radcliffe. It's really there.

The atmosphere was decently creepy. The Eel Marsh House had the great hallmarks of a haunted house: secluded and out of the way, overgrown vegetation, dark hallways and even darker rooms, bad glass in the window panes. Yup. It's a delightfully scary house. Would've been nice if the story could've lived up to the spookiness.

The story follows Radcliffe who come from London to close out the affairs of the last, late owner of the Eel Marsh House. The surrounding village doesn't want him there because once Eel Marsh House is messed with children die horrible deaths. And it happens. Death comes for the kids and it's the woman in black. Spooky. Radcliffe has to confront this ghost or else personal harm will come.

I don't know about you, but I don't think that I can stay in a house which plainly shows the ghost roaming the halls. Or with a rocking chair rocking on its own. Too creepy. I wish this movie had made me scared to sleep at night but it didn't.

The Thing (2011) is coming! So is @M_E_Winstead. I wonder, when viewing the trailer, you get that Ripley feeling. O, Mary Elizabeth, can you kick alien ass as great as Ms. Weaver.

I am so there. I can't resist her big brown eyes.

In the morning before the ground shook, I was reading Micheal Chabon's Maps And Legends and came upon his intro to Casting the Runes, an anthology of M.R. James ghost stories. Chabon celebrates the short story "Oh, Whistle and I'll Come to You, My Lad!" as M.R. James' greatest ghost story. He also laments that the ghost story has fallen out of favor with writers.

I concur. There's something satisfying about a well crafted ghost stories. A well written ghost story sends shivers up your spine and is a joy to read. You're frightened and elated and that's a good feeling.

What I liked about Chabon's essay was that he went touched upon a few things I noticed about ghost stories -- things I felt I should write about too. Here's where I write about them.

Chabon talked about the first person perspective of most ghosts stories. They are mostly told by a narrator describing ghastly things he has seen or has heard about from a reliable source. Chabon talked about the truthiness of the ghost story accounts. The narrator's account from a first person perspective -- can you trust 'em? Or that they seem almost true. Chabon talked about how they were told on cold winter nights around camp fires. That's the best time for ghost stories. And they are told, spoken, enough to scare you.

I, too, love the first person perspective of the ghost story. "I don't believe in the supernatural, but...." They always open like that and you get hooked. I don't believe in the supernatural but I love the chills I get from reading them. I love 'em in the winter. The darkness. The cold. Under the covers. The darkness. All are conducive to being frightened.

It's almost fall and the day's are getting longer. It's almost time for a good ghost story. "I don't believe in the supernatural..."

I had a nightmare last night. I can't remember the complete specifics. Maybe it wasn't a true nightmare of being chased or stalked or haunted. Maybe it was just a creeped out feeling while asleep. All I know is that I woke up in the middle of the night with the chills as if something, evil, was in the room with me.

I usually keep the door to my bathroom closed. Since it's winter, my furnace is always on. So I keep the door to my bathroom open so that it isn't stuffy with heat in the morning. After I woke up in chills, I spied the black maw that is the open bathroom. I couldn't get it out of my mind that something, evil, was going to come out of there.

I roll over, but that black maw of creepiness is still there.

I try to use the magic kumut, but it was too hot to get under the cover.

I have to go to bed tonight. The dark maw of the bathroom beckoning, but hopefully nothing evil in the room with me.
