Best Films of 2017

No 5 star movies. Mainly 4 stars. Although, to be honest, Your Name should be five stars. And perhaps Jedi and Spiderman should be demoted to three. Beyond that I think most of these were pretty good. Surprising that there's a few super hero movies here. Sadly, the state of the industry is such that only super hero movies are being made.

You should check out both Lady Bird and 20th Century Women on a double bill because they deserve to be seen back-to-back.

Blade Runner will again become a beloved classic. Thor: Ragnarok as well.

Have you thought about the best movies of the 21st century? We're only 17 years in, but there have been many, many good ones. Run a search for "5 of 5 stars" on BrowserMetrics and you'll find a few.

Best Films of 2016

I do this every year because I usually watch a lot of the movies that come out in the theatre. It's my list of best films watched where I ponied up money to see in a darkened auditorium. Once again, these are based on the 4 or 5 star film review. Now whether those stars hold up, it is left to myself to see sometime in the future. But more often they slip. There are only very few I still admire. Those would be the 5 stars films. I don't think I have any this year. O, well. Onto the show!

La La Land. 4 stars
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. 4 stars
The Handmaiden. 4 stars
Kubo and the Two Strings . 4 stars
Star Trek Beyond. 4 stars

That's it.

And if I would say it, The Handmaiden is my favorite. Most likely because of the eroticism in it. But it was really well made and it was a surprise when I saw it.

Best Movies of 2015

Here's the year end list of the best movies I saw live in the theatre for 2015. "Best" means I gave it greater than or equal to 4 stars (4 or 5).

4 stars. Star Wars: The Force Awakens -- I can't wait to find out what happens to Rey. I hope she becomes a real good character if they write her correctly.
4 stars. Perfect Blue -- An old anime, but seen for the first time, Satoshi Kon's first film makes me miss him more.
5 stars. Mad Max: Fury Road -- AWESOME!
4 stars. While We're Young -- Kylo Ren is emo.
4 stars. Selma -- Should've won best picture last year.

These were the films I loved after walking out of the movie theatre. That's not a lot considering I think I saw at least 20. There are a few I wish I loved more, but they didn't make the grade. Maybe sometime later they will, but for now these will suffice.

Best of 2014: Movie Reviews

I think that I am the only one watching movies in the theatre. I saw plenty this year. I mostly liked them. Not too many stood out. Here's my year end review of the last 365 days of movies I saw in theatres. Going over some of the other ones which didn't make this list, there were a few that could've been higher. John Wick and Hercules could've been 4 and 3.5 if I think about it now, but I don't give out half stars, and I don't know why I couldn't appreciate the stylized violence of using a gun like a knife. They deserved better. Also, Pompeii isn't as bad; it's worth a look at least for the sinking of the ship... er I mean the volcano.

Anywhoo, here's my best of list. It's short, because everything else was three stars. And these are the best for real.

There's a lot to argue about on this list. Satoshi Kon relegated to the last 50? No where near the top? Please, have you seen Millennium Actress? The Incredibles should be in the top three. They didn't even rank The Wind Rises, but put Totoro and Spirited Away in the top three. Pinnochio? I'm still steamed about Satoshi Kon's Millennium Actress...

Watching Ozu on a rainy Sunday evening, and I end up looking up the wikipedia entry for Late Spring which leads me to today's link.

It's a link to a compilation of lists that add up to the 1000 best pictures of all time.

There's a lot to digest in a list like this. Did they leave any out? Are there any out of order? Are there any out of place? I'm sure we all have our own biases. Does this list exhibit any?

What's your take?

Also, Ozu's Late Spring comes in at 207, but his Tokyo Story is high up there at 11.

Best Pictures List 2011

I've become really stingy when it comes to doling out stars in my reviews. I only gave one movie a plus positive rating of four stars or more from all the movies I've seen this year. My list is so meager that I'm adding in the best movie I saw this year which happened to be on DVD. Also, the other movie I added is considered the best picture from last year, but I saw it this calendar year. There's plenty of 3 star movies this year and there are also plenty of two stars or less. It's depressing. Movies haven't moved me in awhile. Perhaps I may see something on the last day which would.

I've got to post at least something a day just to make BrowserMetrics' Seventh Annual NewsRadio Quote Month worth it.

I've been trying to set up a subversion repository on my MacMinIntel, but have been stuck for days figuring out where to put it. I would like for it not to show up in a Finder window, but I would like it accessible from all over the place (i.e. over the wireless network to my MacBook Pro). The problem then is one of permissions and such. I tried to create it in one of the root directories, but ran into permission problems. Can someone clarify where to put a subversion repository on Snow Leopard (not the server version)? Or maybe that is my problem, that I am not running the server version.

Apple released new iPod Touches with FaceTime. Looks to be the cool. If I didn't have jonesing for iPhone 4, I would be all over that. Also, if I had more than 3 GB of music, maybe as well.

Tweeting has been so much fun. I wish you would join me.

Ten Best Pictures!

Here's imDb's list of nominees.

I've seen seven of the ten best pictures: Avatar, District 9, An Education, Inglourious Basterds, A Serious Man, Up, and Up in the Air. Interesting considering the number of nominees.

Of the three I didn't see, The Hurt Locker is the only one I'm really interested in. The Blind Side maybe. Precious, based on the Novel Saphire by whatshername, not interested.

I wonder if this changes things for the Oscar Pool?

What's the deal with no Ponyo though?

My Best Films of the Year: 2009

The end of the year and the end of the aughts brings another list of movies. Like the previous ones, these movies are rated 4 stars and above when I wrote the review. Most likely, if I re-watch them, they wouldn't be rated so high.

Every year, the lists seems to get shorter. I'm either being more judgmental of the films I saw this year or my taste is getting more refined. I admit that this year I have missed lots of movies in the theatre. I shouldn't have published my list until seeing the movies of December, but I doubt I would ever get to those coming out this month. I'll update if appropriate. I can't wait to see yours.

The summer anime season has come to an end. Here's a quick hits on the ones I watched.

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. Started out awesome, then we got into the Endless Eight loop for fucking six episodes. SIX EPISODES of the same damn thing. NOTHING changing but their clothes. I can't wait for this on DVD. The final couple of episodes encapsulating The Sigh of Haruhi Suzumiya was slower than I would've liked. But we did get Nagato. C+

Tokyo Magnitude 8. Alright, but I didn't want to get death, and got it anyway. B-

Taishou Yakyu Musume. Baseball girls of the Taishou period. Awesome. B+

Sora no Manimani. Great astronomy club school comedy. A

So what to watch in the upcoming season?

It's not TV...

..it's great shows I've not seen.

Weird. I used to love watching television. I'm too busy surfing the net to be bothered with following a show. I'm also downloading anime which I seem to like better than the boobtube.

Here's a list of shows that are highly acclaimed that I have not watched. Even though they're available on DVD. I don't really care to catch up. My loss.

89.7 Greatest Artists? Are you sure?

I should've flagged this before, but I was in that funk when I didn't want to write any blog posts. WTMD is doing their fundraising drive by playing two songs from their user submitted 897 greatest artists.

We should've gamed it so that we could've gotten The Screaming Blue Messiahs played.

Anime 2009 in the Spring

Each of these links could've been a link of the day, but as it is I am kind of excited about watching some new anime so I had to post this so that you too can be excited about new anime.

White Album has Aya Hirano as one of the voice actresses so this anime will have some singing.

Mariaholic looks to have some ecchi-ness, but with a trap. Looks to be fun.

Rideback has some cute anime girl in the lead.

Hetalia Axis Powers is an anime with anthropomorphic representation of countries fighting amongst themselves.

I'm getting my bittorrent on!
